Knowledge is POWER!

Growing up I hated school. As an un-diagnosed dyslexic I felt so uncomfortable reading, spelling, learning that I completely rejected every aspect of education. I felt I was just NOT that clever and I learnt to ‘get by’. What I mean by getting by, I mean covering my mistakes just enough that I did not get in trouble. I got diagnosed aged 30 when I returned to collage. This changed everything for me. I no longer apologize for my grammar or spelling mistakes. Now I just say ‘oh yeah, I can’t see that, I am dyslexic’.

Although I rejected school, I still would read. As a child I did not learn to read till almost 9, something I covered over as I felt I was stupid compared to my cousins who were all so ahead of me. However, once it clicked I read everything that was not school related. Looking back, I see I was still educating myself but in my own way. When I went back to collage as a mature student I was awaken to a world of learning. I learnt how to read medical articles which took me four years as they once looked like double dutch to me. Learning this skill was an opening to a new world for me. I fell in love with learning. I went on to do a post-grad and now I see this was something I did to prove to myself that ‘I could do it’.

I now love learning. Tell me an illness and I will research multiple medical articles to learn the in’s and out’s. I have recently enrolled in my next step in learning after saving a year to do this course! Sometimes learning is extremely expensive. However there are many free resources available, courses that you can put on your CV. I count us extremely lucky as a country that many third level courses are free. My bachelors degree was completely free except the costs of collage life. My post grad was funded by the HSE when I was working as a nurse. One of my sisters went to collage in London and paid for her masters. The costs are insane. So I always remind myself to be grateful.
